SF Supe Goes After Bus Drivers' Pay

A San Francisco supervisor is taking aim at the salaries of the city's public transit drivers.

Sean Elsbernd has drafted a ballot proposal that would eliminate a provision in the city charter guaranteeing Municipal Transportation Agency drivers the second-highest salaries of any transit operators in the country. Elsbernd submitted it to the city attorney's office Monday for review.

He says salaries and benefits should be part of regular contract negotiations, not enshrined in the charter.

But union officials say he is unfairly targeting drivers for Muni's money problems instead of coming up with a systemwide reform plan.

Elsbernd hopes to begin collecting the signatures he needs to qualify the measure for the ballot by the end of the month.
