CHP Working to Identify 580 Shooter

Investigators are still trying to locate a car involved in a shooting Wednesday on Interstate Highway 580 in Oakland that sent a 27-year-old El Sobrante resident to the hospital.

The shooting happened about 5:45 p.m. on eastbound I-580 at Harrison Street, during the height of the evening commute.

California Highway Patrol officers arrived to find an abandoned 1998 Chevolet Camaro marked with multiple bullet holes.

A short time later, a man who had been shot multiple times in the legs showed up at the nearby Alta Bates Summit Medical Center. He was transferred to Highland Hospital and is expected to survive his wounds.

CHP Officer Sam Morgan said today it appears the victim was a passenger in the Camaro and was shot by someone in another car, possibly with an AK-47 rifle.

The driver of the Camaro, also an El Sobrante resident, pulled over after the shooting and a good Samaritan who was passing by offered to drive the victim to Alta Bates.

"The driver of the vehicle who was with the victim chose to walk on foot to the same facility," Morgan said.

Both the driver and his wounded passenger are cooperating with police, Morgan said. "They've been able to give pretty good information," he said.

Morgan declined to discuss a possible motive for the shooting, saying it could compromise the investigation, but said it was not random.

"This does not appear to be a person who was indiscriminately shooting at vehicles on the freeway," he said.

The CHP is working to compile a description of the suspect vehicle, which contained three people.

"We have not located the suspect vehicle or the shooters because there's some discrepancy as to the color, make and model of the vehicle," he said.

Investigators are also examining expended bullet casings found on the highway, which was briefly shut down after the shooting.
