Parent/Teacher Pink Slip Protest

Teachers and parents are expected to be out in force today to protest a flood of layoff notices going out to educators.

A state law requires school districts to notify teachers and other school employees by today that they could be laid off by the end of the semester.

With the state facing a massive budget shortfall, the California Department of Education estimates that as many as 26,000 teachers could be getting pink slips.

In Oakland, 762 teachers have received notices they could be losing their jobs.

School districts in Santa Clara County have sent out notices to nearly 1,000 teachers.

Demonstrations protesting the layoffs are planned today in a number of Bay Area cities, including San Francisco, Berkeley, Fremont and San Jose.
